Can Scratched, Gouged or Faded Interior Plastic Trim Be Restored?
Most interior plastic scratches are recoverable without filler at all — the grain can be relaxed back. The exceptions are worth knowing before you try.

Usually yes, and often without filler. Textured plastic that has been scratched can frequently be improved by controlled heat that relaxes the surface and lets the molded grain reassert itself. Deeper gouges are filled with a plastic-compatible product, textured to match and recolored. The two exceptions are piano-black gloss trim, where light scratching polishes out and deep scratching often does not, and film-wrapped trim, which cannot be refinished at all.

How many kinds of plastic a modern interior contains
Establishing which surface you are looking at is the first step, because each behaves differently.
Hard textured plastic is the most common: door card lowers, pillar trims, kick panels, glovebox fronts, seat side shrouds. It has a molded grain and a low sheen.
Soft-touch coated plastic has a rubbery layer over a rigid substrate, used on upper door panels, dash tops and console surrounds. It feels pleasant and it is the surface most likely to go sticky with age and heat.
Gloss piano-black is the modern favorite for center stacks, shifter surrounds and screen bezels. It looks excellent for about a week and scratches visibly thereafter.
Film-wrapped trim covers wood-effect and carbon-effect inserts, where a printed film is bonded over a plastic core.
Real wood and metal trim exist on premium vehicles and are separate trades.
A single console might contain four of these, which is why an assessment looks at the whole area rather than the specific scratch.
Why textured plastic can be repaired without filler
This is the useful surprise, and it is worth understanding because it changes the cost of a lot of common damage.
Molded plastic trim carries a grain that was pressed into it while the material was hot and formable. That shape is held in the material rather than applied on top of it.
When something scratches the surface, it displaces and flattens the grain rather than removing much material. The plastic still has a memory of the shape it was molded into.
Controlled heat relaxes the surface enough for that shape to reassert, and the scratch reduces or disappears without anything being added.
This works on light to moderate scratching in textured plastic, and it is genuinely satisfying because there is no filler, no color and no boundary to blend.
It has a limit. Too much heat distorts the panel or gives it a glazed, shiny patch that is worse than the scratch, which is exactly why this is a controlled process rather than something to try with a heat gun from the garage.
When filler is needed
Deeper damage needs material added, and the sequence mirrors leather repair with different products.
The area is cleaned and degreased. Interior plastics accumulate protectant dressings, and silicone in particular has to come off or nothing will bond.
Any raised or torn edges around a gouge are leveled.
A filler formulated for the specific plastic type is built up in thin layers. Plastic fillers differ from leather fillers — they have to bond to a plastic surface and match its flex and thermal behavior.
Grain is pressed into the final layer using a texture plate matched to the molded pattern. Since these patterns are molded and repeat, matching is reliable.
Color is applied with a coating made for plastics, in thin coats, feathered out.
Sheen is matched at the topcoat stage — most interior plastic is a specific low sheen, and getting it wrong is the most common way a technically sound repair still looks wrong.
Faded and grayed trim
Fading is what makes an older interior look tired even when nothing is damaged, and it recolors well.
Sun through the glass degrades the pigment in interior plastics just as it does in leather finishes. Black trim goes gray or brownish, dark gray goes chalky, and colored trim shifts.
It is not dirt. Cleaning a faded panel brings back a little depth by removing surface film, and the underlying color loss stays.
Restoring it means cleaning, keying the surface and applying a coating formulated for plastic in the correct color and sheen.
The result is dramatic on a vehicle where the pillar trims and door lowers have grayed, because those pieces frame everything else visually.
It is also usually done as a set. Recoloring one pillar trim when the others have faded produces a visible mismatch, so the job is normally the group of pieces rather than a single panel.
Piano black: the difficult one
Gloss black trim deserves its own treatment because it is both the most scratched surface in modern interiors and the least forgiving.
It scratches from almost nothing: a fingernail, a phone sliding across it, a dry cloth used to dust it.
Light surface scratching can often be polished out, using progressively finer abrasives and a finishing polish, the same way a painted surface is corrected. The result on shallow scratching is excellent.
Deeper scratches are a different matter. Polishing removes material from the surrounding area to bring the surface down to the base of the scratch, and on a thin gloss layer there is a limit to how much can be removed before it goes through.
A gouge through the gloss layer usually means replacement of the trim piece, which on many vehicles is available and not expensive.
The practical advice for owners: never dust piano black with a dry cloth. Use a slightly damp microfiber, because dry dust dragged across gloss is exactly what causes the fine scratching.
Film-wrapped trim cannot be refinished
Wood-effect and carbon-effect inserts on most modern vehicles are a printed film bonded to a plastic core, sometimes under a clear layer.
The appearance lives entirely in that film. Sanding, filling or coating it destroys the pattern, and there is no way to reproduce a printed wood grain by hand.
Where the film has lifted, bubbled or delaminated — which heat drives, so it is common here — the options are rewrapping the piece with new film or replacing it.
Rewrapping is a specialist service and it works well, and it is also an opportunity to change the finish if you want something different.
The important thing is not to attempt to refinish it. A film-wrapped insert that has been coated looks obviously wrong, and it cannot be undone.
Telling it apart from real wood is straightforward: look at the edge of the piece for a wrap line, and look for a repeating pattern across two pieces that should have different natural grain.
Sticky soft-touch coatings
This is one of the most common complaints on vehicles in this region, and it is not a cleaning problem.
Soft-touch coatings are a rubbery layer applied over rigid plastic. Over time, and much faster at high temperatures, that layer degrades and becomes tacky.
Cleaning gives temporary improvement and the tackiness returns within days, because more degraded material comes to the surface.
The fix is removing the failed coating entirely and refinishing the substrate underneath. That produces a surface which is slightly less soft than original but is stable, cleanable and correctly colored.
Attempting to seal over a degrading coating does not work — the new layer sits on something that is still breaking down.
Cabin heat is the driver, which is why this shows up on Texas vehicles years earlier than in milder climates and why a sunshade genuinely delays it.
What owners should avoid
A few common habits cause most of the avoidable damage to interior plastics.
Dry dusting gloss trim, which is the leading cause of fine scratching on piano black.
Silicone-heavy dressings, which produce a glare, attract dust visibly, and contaminate the surface so any later repair needs extra preparation.
All-purpose cleaners and disinfectant wipes, which dull and eventually degrade plastic coatings just as they do leather finishes.
Melamine sponges, which are abrasive and remove the molded grain along with the mark.
Heat guns and hair dryers used at home to try the grain-relaxing trick. The temperature window is narrow, and overshooting distorts the panel permanently or leaves a glazed shiny patch.
And parking in full sun without a windshield shade, which is the underlying cause of most trim fading and soft-touch failure.
Doing it alongside the rest of the interior
Plastic trim work is rarely worth its own visit and is almost always worth adding to another job.
The pieces that matter visually are the ones framing the driver's view: the console surround, the door card uppers and lowers, the pillar trims and the dash edges.
Restoring those alongside a seat or steering wheel repair makes the whole interior read as maintained rather than patched, and the setup and masking are shared so the added cost is modest.
Color is also matched once across everything, which matters when several pieces have faded to slightly different degrees.
For a vehicle being sold, faded gray pillar trims against a refreshed seat is a mismatch a buyer notices, so it is worth doing the group rather than the highlight.
What to send for an assessment
Photograph the damaged trim square-on with the door open in daylight, no flash — flash on gloss trim produces a mirror and shows nothing.
Take a second shot from a low raking angle across the surface, which reveals both scratch depth and how much grain has been flattened.
Photograph the same type of trim elsewhere in the vehicle, undamaged, for texture and color reference.
Say which type of surface you think it is: hard textured, soft-touch, gloss black, or film-wrapped. If you are unsure, a close photograph of the edge of the piece usually settles it.
Run a fingernail across the scratch and say whether it catches. That single answer separates a heat-relaxation job from a filled one.
And say whether anything has already been applied — dressings, polishes, or a previous repair attempt — because that changes the preparation.
