Why the thread goes before the vinyl
It surprises owners that a boat seat can have perfect-looking panels and a seam that has simply come apart.
Marine vinyl is built for UV. It carries a surface coating with UV inhibitors and it is engineered for years of direct exposure.

How to inspect them properly
This takes ten minutes and it is the highest-return maintenance on a boat interior.
Run a hand slowly along every seam, pressing gently. Thread that has degraded feels different — it gives, or you can feel the panels separating slightly under pressure.
Look for thread that has gone lighter or fuzzy compared with thread in shaded areas. Faded, frayed-looking stitching is thread that is nearly gone even where nothing has opened yet.
Pull gently either side of each seam. A seam about to fail separates slightly and shows the stitch holes.
Look for any point where you can see through the seam, which means it is already open.
Check inside seams where hardware passes through, since these are often hidden and often first.
Do this at the start and the end of every season. The end-of-season check is more valuable, because it catches what is about to fail before the boat sits closed up for months.

Restitch by hand or by machine
Both are legitimate and they suit different situations.
Machine stitching produces the strongest and most uniform result, and it is what the seam had originally. It requires access to the seam, which usually means the cushion coming off the boat or at least the panel being freed.
Hand stitching is done in place. A skilled hand seam using the correct technique is genuinely durable and it is the practical answer for a seam that cannot be reached without dismantling half a seat.
For a short split in an awkward position, hand work in place is usually the sensible route and saves removing and refitting the cushion.
For a long run, a seam that has failed along most of its length, or a cushion that is coming off anyway, machine work is better.

Rinse and dry after use so water does not sit in the stitch holes.
Keep bleach off the boat entirely. It attacks thread directly, and boats that get bleached for mildew have their seams fail first.
Keep pressure washers away from seams, since they force water straight through the stitch holes into the foam.
Apply a UV protectant across the upholstery a few times a season, which covers the thread as well as the vinyl.
And keep up the twice-yearly seam check, because the whole economics of this depends on catching failures while they are still seams rather than tears.
Matching the thread and the stitch
A restitched seam should not be findable, and two details decide whether it is.
Thread color is the obvious one. Original thread has usually faded along with everything else, so matching to a new spool of the factory color produces a seam that reads as brighter than the ones either side of it.
Matching to the thread as it is now is the better approach, and where a whole cushion is being redone, doing every seam on it removes the comparison entirely.
