Should You Put Olive Oil, Coconut Oil or Petroleum Jelly on Leather?
It is the most repeated piece of leather advice online and one of the few that causes damage which cannot be undone.

Why this advice is everywhere
It sounds reasonable. Leather is a natural material, oil is natural, dry things need oiling. The logic holds together well enough that the suggestion has propagated across the internet for years, and it turns up in comment threads, videos and household-tips articles constantly.
It also produces an immediately convincing result. Apply olive oil to a dull leather surface and it darkens, looks richer and appears revived. That visual change is what makes people recommend it to others.
What is happening is that a layer of oil on the surface is changing how light reflects off it. Nothing has been fed, restored or repaired. Once the oil migrates, oxidizes or picks up dust, the appearance goes back and then keeps going.
The advice is not malicious. It is simply based on a model of leather that has not applied to furniture upholstery for a very long time.
What finished leather actually is
Almost all furniture and automotive leather is finished: the hide carries a pigment layer and a clear flexible topcoat on top of it.
That coating is the reason the material is durable, cleanable and resistant to staining. It is also, crucially, a barrier.
Nothing applied to the surface reaches the hide underneath, because the coating stops it. That includes conditioner, which works by remaining in and flexing the finish rather than by soaking into the leather in the way the word implies.
So the premise of the oil advice — that the hide is thirsty and needs feeding — does not apply. You cannot feed a hide through a sealed coating, and applying more oil does not change that.
The exception is genuinely unfinished leather: aniline, nubuck, suede, and some traditional tack and saddlery. Those do absorb, and that is precisely why oil damages them in a different and more permanent way.
What happens over the following weeks
The sequence is consistent enough to be predictable.
In the first days the surface looks better. This is the stage that produces the enthusiastic recommendations.
Within a week or two the oil has attracted dust and airborne soil, which it holds against the surface. The area starts looking grubby rather than rich, and it feels slightly tacky.
Over the following weeks the oil begins to oxidize. Vegetable oils are unstable, and oxidation produces a smell — the same smell as an old cooking pan left in a cupboard. On a sofa it becomes noticeable in a warm room, and it does not wash out because the oil is bound into the surface.
On absorbent leather, the oil that soaked in migrates outward through the hide, so the darkened patch spreads beyond where it was applied and its edges become diffuse rather than sharp.
Coconut oil adds one more problem: it solidifies below about 75 degrees Fahrenheit, so it can produce a waxy film that shows fingerprints.
The consequence that costs money
The appearance and smell are unpleasant. The contamination is what turns this into an expensive mistake.
Every stage of leather repair and refinishing depends on adhesion. Filler has to bond to the surface. Color has to bond to the filler and the surrounding finish. Topcoat has to bond to the color.
Oil prevents all three. A surface with oil in or on it repels the water-based systems used in professional refinishing, and anything applied over it lifts within weeks or months.
So before any work can happen, the oil has to be removed — and oil that has migrated into a hide is genuinely difficult to remove. It requires repeated degreasing, and even then it can wick back to the surface afterward.
The practical result is that a piece treated with kitchen oil costs more to refinish than an identical untreated piece, and in bad cases the outcome is less certain.

Petroleum jelly and the other home remedies
Olive and coconut oil are the most common, but the same reasoning applies across a family of suggestions.
Petroleum jelly leaves a heavy residue that transfers to clothing, attracts dust, and on some finishes softens the topcoat over time. It does not absorb and it does not condition.
Baby oil is mineral oil with fragrance — same problems, plus a scent that lingers.
Hair conditioner is formulated for keratin, not for a polymer coating, and it leaves surfactant residue behind.
Furniture polish containing silicone creates a barrier that repels repair products and migrates onto clothing.
Shoe polish sits on the surface, transfers, and contains waxes and dyes not intended for upholstery.
Saddle soap belongs on unfinished tack leather. On a pigmented sofa it strips finish rather than cleaning it.
The pattern across all of them: products designed for a different material, applied to a coated surface that needs something specific.
What conditioning actually does, and what to use
A conditioner made for finished upholstery leather works with the coating rather than through it.
Its job is to keep the finish and the hide flexible, so the surface bends without cracking at the fold lines — the seat front, the arm crown, the crease behind a headrest.
It is formulated to be compatible with the finish systems used on furniture and vehicles, which is what makes it safe when a future repair is needed.
Use it sparingly. Two or three times a year on everyday furniture in this climate, applied to a cloth rather than the surface, worked in evenly, and buffed off after ten to fifteen minutes.
That buffing step matters: anything not absorbed after that time is sitting on top, and product left on the surface produces the same tacky, dust-attracting result as oil, just less dramatically.
Clean before conditioning, always. Conditioner over dirt seals the dirt against the finish.
If you have already used oil on a piece
It is not necessarily a disaster, and what to do next depends on how much and how long ago.
If it was applied recently and lightly to finished leather, blot the surface with a dry cloth to lift what has not yet bound, then clean the panel with a proper leather cleaner. Repeat over a few days rather than scrubbing once.
Do not add more product on top, and do not apply conditioner to try to even it out.
If the piece has been oiled repeatedly, or if it has developed a smell, professional degreasing is the realistic route. Specialist degreasers reach what consumer cleaners cannot, and it usually takes more than one pass.

How to tell whether your leather actually needs conditioning
Rather than working to a calendar, a couple of checks tell you where a piece stands.
Press a thumb firmly into the seat and release. Supple leather deforms with fine wrinkling and recovers smoothly. Leather that feels board-like, or that shows fine cracking under thumb pressure, is dry.
Run a hand across the surface. A slightly rough, papery feel where the leather used to feel smooth indicates the finish has lost flexibility.
Look at the fold lines specifically — the front edge of a seat cushion, the crown of an arm. That is where dryness shows first, and where cracking begins.
If those checks say the piece is dry, condition it properly. If they say it is fine, leave it alone — over-conditioning produces its own tacky, soil-attracting surface.
And if the surface is already tacky, that is not dryness at all. It is a finish breaking down, usually from chemical exposure, and it needs cleaning and assessment rather than any product.
